Campus Fight at Freedom High School Raises Concerns Among Parents
A fight on campus at Oakley’s Freedom High School in Contra Costa County has left some parents feeling uneasy.
The incident, which took place on Friday night, was caught on camera, showing a scuffle that escalated when one student began chasing another with a knife.
Parents React with Concern
Miguel Meza, whose son attends Freedom High School, said he received a text from his son as soon as it happened.
“That’s definitely worrisome and scary,” Meza told NBC Bay Area. “He texted me saying something happened—a fight broke out at school, someone pulled a knife, and everyone started running.”
According to Meza, his son, along with other students, ran to get away from the chaos. He quickly responded, urging his son to stay out of harm’s way, emphasizing that school violence is a very real danger.
“As a parent, it’s concerning because I wasn’t there, and I didn’t know what was going on,” Meza said.
School Administration Responds
Freedom High School Principal Steve Amaro, who witnessed the incident, acted swiftly to inform parents. He confirmed that the student involved was arrested. While disappointed by what happened, Amaro remains hopeful, noting that students are not letting the actions of a few overshadow their school spirit, especially during homecoming week.
“There will be an impact on the community, but we’re resilient,” he said. “We’ll move forward.”
Moving Forward Despite Worries
Iris Castro, another concerned parent, admitted she felt uneasy dropping off her freshman the next morning but is trying to stay positive.
“There’s always that worry in the back of your mind—whether it’s a fight, a shooting—these thoughts cross your mind,” she said. “But at the end of the day, we have to keep living our lives.”
